This ports was special designated as the Africa wilder heritage gateway was officially inaugurated in December 1971 and covers close to 110 km square. It was the first international airport to be privatized in Africa in 1998 and is currently operated by Kilimanjaro airports development company (KADCO), a company that is fully owned by the government of Tanzania. The airport is located between two regions of Kilimanjaro and Arusha in the northern Tanzania. Arusha and Kilimanjaro are famous regions of tourism, investment opportunities and daily business activities because of their economic potentialities and unique tourist attractions. The regions are also popular due to the presence of tanzanite which are among the most precious gemstone and can only be found in mererani hills situated just few miles from the airport. The gemstone turned up in the year 1962 and gained its popularity in 1968, it’s highly demanded for its multi-color appearance as well as its limited availability.

The airport can handle aircraft as large as Boeing 747s and antonoy 124s despite its small size. The airport can serve up to 800,000 passengers. According to the records of 2014, total number of 802,731 passengers was recorded, of whom 38 percent were domestic, and 45 percent were international and 17 percent transit. The airport underwent major renovation from 2015 after the government of Tanzania signed a grant contract with the government of Netherlands the previous year.     Within the airport building there are 2 bars that serve snacks and drinks, one just before you go through the security and the other in the departure lounge. Wi-Fi services are available for free but not very much reliable.

    ATM machines are available 24 hours in the airport but we advise you to check your bank’s daily withdrawal limit, and its daily fee schedule especially if you are an international traveller.
