6-Day Kilimanjaro Bike Tour Via Kilema/Marangu Route | 2026-2027
Conquer Africa’s highest peak on two wheels with Tanzania Safari Radar! Designed for experienced mountain bikers and thrill-seekers, our 6-day Kilimanjaro biking expedition utilizes the dedicated Kilema Route (paralleling Marangu) to deliver an extraordinary mix of technical riding, rich high-altitude landscapes, and optimized acclimatization. As the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro permitted for cycling, it allows you to lodge in solar-powered A-frame wooden huts while taking on an epic mountain bike push to the summit.
To maximize safety, physical endurance, and summit success, our 6-Day Kilimanjaro Mountain Bike Tour includes an essential acclimatization riding day at Horombo Hut (3,700m). Starting at Kilema Gate, your ride carries you through five distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforest single-track trails and heather moorlands to the rugged alpine desert leading up to Kibo Peak.
On Day 3, you will apply the proven "ride high, sleep low" concept with an acclimatization ride towards Mawenzi Hut or Zebra Rocks (4,020m). This high-altitude riding session helps your cardiopulmonary system adjust to low oxygen levels while letting you sharpen your bike handling skills across rocky switchbacks before the midnight summit push from Kibo Hut (4,700m).
During the midnight summit push, you will navigate glacial scree slopes with a combination of pushing, carrying (hike-a-bike), and riding to reach Gillman's Point and power through to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft). Celebrate an unforgettable sunrise at the Roof of Africa before enjoying a thrill-packed downhill descent back down the mountain. Tanzania Safari Radar handles all logistics, from cycling permits and expert bike guides to trail mechanics and energy-rich meal plans ensuring an elite, safe, and bucket-list-worthy ride.
At Tanzania Safari Radar, we start your 6-Day Kilimanjaro Mountain Biking adventure the moment we greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. We transfer you directly to your comfortable hotel in Moshi, where our certified biking guides conduct a comprehensive equipment check, bike fitting, and safety briefing to ensure your mountain bike is perfectly prepped for the trails ahead.
Your expedition begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate for official registration before heading to Kilema Gate (2,100 m), the starting point for Kilimanjaro cycling. Our guides lead your ride through the dense rainforest onto moorland single-track trails leading to Horombo Hut (3,700 m). Enjoy an invigorating ride as support porters transport your gear to the huts.
To ensure optimal altitude adaptation, Tanzania Safari Radar leads an essential acclimatization ride around Horombo Hut (3,700 m). We pedal towards Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Hut (4,020 m), allowing your body to adapt to low oxygen while enjoying panoramic alpine scenery. We return to Horombo Hut for lunch, bike maintenance, and rest.
This technical training day tests high-altitude cycling capabilities as we ride up the alpine desert saddle towards Kibo Hut (4,700 m). Putting the "ride high, sleep low" strategy into action, our team guides you through rugged volcanic gravel before enjoying an exciting downhill descent back to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight rest.
Tanzania Safari Radar guides your ride across the open alpine desert saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks to reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m). Arriving in the early afternoon, our mountain chef serves a high-energy meal while our mechanical team preps bikes for the summit push, waking you around midnight for the final climb.
Navigating icy crater trails with a combination of riding, pushing, and carrying (hike-a-bike), we reach Gillman's Point and power through to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Celebrate reaching the highest point in Africa with your bike at sunrise, followed by an exhilarating downhill descent back to Kibo Hut and on to Horombo Hut for the night.
Your final day features a continuous downhill ride from Horombo Hut down through the rainforest single-track trails back to Kilema Gate. After completing the ride, we transfer to Marangu Gate to receive your official summit certificates, celebrate with your support crew, and return you to your hotel in Moshi.
