Affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route," Marangu is the only trail on the mountain offering dormitory-style A-frame wooden huts with foam mattresses, keeping you sheltered and dry throughout your climb.
Starting your journey at Marangu Gate (1,860m), your multi-day hike traverses five distinct climate zones starting in rainforests teeming with wildlife, advancing through giant heather moorlands, and culminating in the dramatic alpine desert surrounding Kibo Peak.
Unlike the condensed 5-day option, this 6-day itinerary features a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,700m) with a side trek to Zebra Rocks. This extra day gives your body critical time to adapt to higher elevations, dramatically reducing acute mountain sickness (AMS) risk while keeping a relaxed pace ("pole pole").
Your summit bid commences around midnight on Day 5, climbing up steep volcanic loose rock to reach Gillman’s Point before following the breathtaking crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft) the absolute roof of Africa. From securing official national park permits and providing experienced mountain guides to serving freshly prepared, high-energy meals, Tanzania Safari Radar handles every detail for a seamless and secure adventure.
Start your journey with a personal greeting at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. We drive you straight to your Moshi hotel, where you'll meet your head guide to inspect your gear and finalize trip details.
Following a transfer from Moshi, arrive at Marangu Gate to complete national park park registration and meet your mountain crew. Enter the vibrant, moss-draped rainforest for a gradual hike, keeping watch for local blue monkeys swinging through the canopy on your steady route to Mandara Hut (2,700m).
Emerging above the treeline, you will cross into open alpine moorlands dotted with giant lobelias and endemic groundsels. This 5- to 6-hour trek up to Horombo Hut (3,700m) offers a comfortable, well-paced ascent paired with spectacular, sweeping views of both Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks.
A vital acclimatization day designed to dramatically increase your summit success rate. Take an active acclimatization hike to the striking Zebra Rocks (4,020m) to soak in panoramic mountain views before descending back to Horombo Hut for well-earned rest and elevation adaptation.
Cross the expansive, lunar-like alpine desert saddle linking Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks on your way to Kibo Hut (4,700m). Arriving by early afternoon allows plenty of time to enjoy a warm, nutritious dinner and turn in early for vital rest before your midnight summit ascent.
Begin your midnight summit bid, navigating steep volcanic scree paths up to Gillman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) just in time for a magnificent sunrise atop Africa! After capturing memorable photos at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and meal before making your final descent down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved overnight sleep.
Your final leg of the trek descends back through the vibrant rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you will receive your official Mount Kilimanjaro summit certificates. After a heartfelt farewell celebration with your dedicated mountain crew, enjoy a comfortable transfer back to Moshi for a warm shower and a well-earned rest.
