Your Kilimanjaro adventure with Tanzania Safari Radar begins with a morning transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, where you complete park registration and meet your professional mountain crew. For day 1 of your Kilimanjaro climb through Marangu route the trek starts through dense tropical rainforest, home to towering trees, colorful birds, and playful blue monkeys. This first day is relatively gentle and ideal for warming up your legs while your body starts adjusting to the altitude. After approximately 4–5 hours of hiking through Mount Kilimanjaro, you arrive at Mandara Hut, your overnight accommodation, where you enjoy a hot dinner and rest in preparation for the days ahead.
After breakfast, the trail gradually climbs out of the rainforest into the open heath and moorland zone, offering wide views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, you may see giant lobelias and groundsels unique to Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek takes about 6–7 hours and provides your first clear views of Mawenzi Peak and, weather permitting, Kibo Peak. Upon reaching Horombo Hut, you settle in, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, and spend the evening resting while acclimatizing at higher altitude.
This additional day is what makes the 6-day Marangu Route a better and safer option than the 5-day version. After breakfast, you take a guided acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks (approximately 4,020m) before returning to Horombo Hut for lunch. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit. The afternoon is spent resting, hydrating, and enjoying the dramatic alpine views. Following an early breakfast, you continue your ascent toward Kibo Hut, crossing the wide alpine desert known as the Saddle, which lies between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Around midnight, you begin the final ascent under the stars, trekking slowly toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. After a short rest, you continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and the ultimate achievement of your Kilimanjaro climb. After photos and celebrations at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. Day 5 of Marangu route Kilimanjaro trekking is the longest and most challenging day, but also the most rewarding.
After breakfast, you make your final descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates before being transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
